Seasonal Anime Reviews: Fall 2013

Not sure if this is just a coincidence that this girl looks like Tsukiko from Henneko.

OK, so since it's the end of the year (And the first year of me stop being everybody's best friend anime fan) this is where it all closes off. First, my thoughts on this season, then we close off 2013 with my Top and Bottom of the year. So let me start off with this Fall season. This lame-ass Fall season!

Top 10 Anime of 2013

I thought 2013 was a pretty weak year for anime. Of course there were certainly a decent amount of things that I liked and enjoyed. It was difficult compiling the top ten list this year. For the first time I have movies and specials on here simply because I didn't have enough TV series that I loved this year. Number ten was, again, a fight between a couple of series.

2012 CARRY OVERS

Near Future Insurgents Complete

The problem with having a huge number of ESWAT troops or using Elite teams like the Ghost in the Shell Section 9 Team is that in order to play a balanced game you need a fair number of baddies.

So using all of the Oddzial Osmy figures I could muster I mixed in some Rebel Minis, GZG and Khurasan figures. Some of these were painted by two other people, so I touched them up a little to better match my painting style. I also went with a uniform base color and flocking. I think they fit together pretty well.

Sword Art Online (Anime)

To say I've been out of touch with the Anime scene would be a pretty accurate statement. The last I bothered to watch was Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The last one I actually bought on DVD was Cowboy Bebop, also known as the greatest thing Japanese animation has ever produced. At some point, I grew bored with it and decided to take a break from it entirely.*

Flash forward to today, where I stumble on Sword Art Online, which might have brought me back into the fold. I binged on it - watching the entire series in a day - and immediately found myself looking to see what else I might have missed while I was away. Even when you're sure you're out, all it takes is one good hit to bring you back in.

Review of SciFi movies in 2013

6 months ago I made a list of most SciFi movies listed in for .They listed 483 movies! My list only has 267 movies since I only listed those that were mostly SciFi.You can see that list .The list below is the same list but without the descriptions.

I only saw these 14 movies from my list of 267.Actually that number is 13 because Riley Rewind is a series, not a movie.

Cross Country Weekender

Cross Country Weekender

Welcome to the newly branded UK Cine, as named by Mark Humphreys of Northampton. Your copy of Elfen Lied volume one is in the mail. I have mixed feelings about the event but it does appear the organisers have started to get their act together following disappointing shows over the last twelve to eighteen months. While entry remains an exorbitant for standard entry and for early admission, there was a little more on offer this time than merely an oversized car boot sale, but only a little. Both days offered a zombie make up demonstration by Karl Derrick, prosthetics supervisor on The Brothers Grimm and the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, followed by a Q+A session. Elstree Studio exhibited several fullscale Star Wars props, including a Landspeeder from New Hope, clashing oddly with a nearby FAB1 from Thunderbirds. As with the London Expo, there was a chance to try out several online RPGs for free, including Archlords, Guild Wars and City of Heroes.

Best anime programmers and hackers...

So since most of the stuff I talk about on this blog are either computer techy things and anime related things this blog post seems like a good idea.Anyhow let's start from the weakest to the strongest ones.I will split them into programmers and security hackers. Also those here are only from the anime I have watched, and the ones I bothered to remember.

The November 2013 Line-Up

A rather mixed bag this month with a little bit of everything celebrate in each category. I was excited to see a little more information come out regarding the next Detective Conan movie.

I still say Six God Combination God Mars is the oddest title here. But good to see Space Dandy is on track to be HUGE. Hopefully it will live up to expectations.

Ghost in the shell

So i finally got around to watching some Anime since i have been lazing around doing nothing but playing Terraria and Skyrim. I always wanted to watch ghost in the shell but sadly never got around to doing it until today.

This movie is nothing i expected it to be, yet it was so much more. I honestly wished it was longer, not just a mere one hour and twenty minutes. The movie itself does not waste a single second, every minute was pure enjoyment and was extremely dedicated to propelling the story forward. Ghost in the Shell did not feel rushed and they even managed to take you on a tour of a neo tokyo with wonderful music in the background. The atmosphere was nearly always intense and somehow or rather kept me on the edge of my seat.

12 Days of Anime #1 Moment of the Year

The most impactful moment of the year for me is a speech, which ran more or less continuously for nine minutes. That's quite a long speech, and something that is easy to mess up, which makes how great it is all the more impactful. The speech in question appears in episode 9 of Maoyu (Maoyu Maou Yusha / Demon King and Hero), which aired this year. "The Red Scholar" spread knowledge and science to better the lives of the hungry poor, which has the political Central Church denounce her as a heretic, and then she gets a chance to make a speech in front of the people, a very moving speech, a defiant speech, about life, and the human spirit. .

"I am human!" - A moment of triumph of the human spirit.

The 12 Days of Christmas

Amidst the hustle'n'bustle of getting ready for Christmas and the happiness, joy, and good cheer that infuse the season, I am often reminded of the true, root reason for this season. It's not good enough to stop at Jesus is the reason or that He was born. Why was He born? Because He was going to sacrifice Himself to save our souls. Why would He do that? Because He loves us. So, the reason for the season is that He loves us to the point that He was willing to die for us so that we could be saved.

In the spirit of this, I wanted to pick a moment from anime for today that echoed this depth of love. Love enough to sacrifice one's life for another. The problem with picking one is that I'll pass over many others from this year. Instead, I'm picking three.

States Of Mind: Patlabor On Film

I'm breaking the very necessary radio silence that occurred over November. Nanowrimo, as ever, took up a great deal of time, and cruel as it may seem, something had to give.

Let me make it up to you.

Kara no Kyoukai Film 1

, also known as Garden of Sinners, a series of 7 films with a psychological / supernatural focus. The first is called Fukan Fuukei or Overlooking View, and is 48 minutes long. This series of movies almost feels like a series, and is the current focus of an online anime watch club I'm participating in. I will share write-ups written for the club, which aren't written in the form of notes, but also aren't me trying to come up with a specific point (thus far).

Final and important note - these write-ups are written after watching each movie, not the whole series of movies. Spoilers of movies beyond the one numbered in each entry will not be tolerated. This is a Things I Like post, it's not a review, but more a discussion of the show and of ideas that have risen in my mind as I've watched it. It's relatively close to a review though, as aside from describing the movie's plot I actually go over it pretty closely. THERE WILL BE A FAIR AMOUNT OF SPOILERS.

States Of Mind: Patlabor On Film

If Patlabor the Movie took some risks with its depiction of a Japan failed by its future, Patlabor 2 the Movie is extraordinarily brave in confronting some of the most uncomfortable episodes in its past.STATES OF MIND: PATLABOR ON FILM - PART 2

INCURSIONSThe notion of there being little differencebetween a just war and an unjust peace evokes painful memories in a country dedicated to total war for ten years and which then became a crucial bastion in a new conflict that would last for fifty. Japan's strategic importance in that Cold War, positioned as she is a short distance from the southern extremities of the then Soviet Union, became clear in 1976 when Ukrainian pilot Viktor Belenko defected and flew his state-of-the art MiG-25 Foxbat interceptor to Hakodate in northern Japan. The incident was the inspiration for Tsuge's faked aerial incursion, both in the film-makers' minds and the screenplay - it is referred to by Arakawa.

Mangabox: A Closer Look

We have another entry into the 'release manga on an online platform' sweepstakes this week with Mangabox, a project put together by Dena, with assistance from a few manga publishers in Japan, primarily Kodansha. The goal is to release daily manga chapters of various series, some of which may be familiar to English-speaking readers, either because they know the anime, they know the series it's spun off from, or they're familiar with the author. It launched last week with about 22 titles available in English, and it's also available on the Japanese side as well (with a few more titles - more on that below).

All the titles have now had at least one chapter, so we've gotten a basic look at the fare we'll be seeing. It reads very much like a young men's magazine, with some dumb comedy, some romance, some horror, and some adventure. The daily feed of 2-3 new chapters means that no one series overwhelms the other (again, with one irritating exception), and the app itself is easy to use and very readable (it was initially incredibly bright, but they seem to have toned that down a bit in an update).

Updating Illustriously

So this semester is over and I'm hanging around in Aber waiting to be a witness at a Magistrate's trial because of reasons before heading back home for Christmas. Sounds like the perfect time to get on with some painting! Which I have done.

See, look, painted and stuff! The Illustrious Sky Fortress, probably my favourite sky fortress in DW. I decided just plain brown decking was boring and tried some markings, which turned out reasonably well so long as you don't look too close. I also had to paint tiny flyers, which is something I've been putting off since I started playing DW...

Mothballs: Soups And Strings May Break My Bones, But Muybridge Never Hurt My Cat

THIS WEEK: Muybridge's Strings and Cat Soup

A late Thanksgiving means December snuck up on me this year, so I need to get cracking on some Really Fun Posts I have planned and eventual end of the year writing shenanigans. As such, while I develop more of a head start on those, the round of dives into the anime backcatalog swamp this week gunned for short artsy pieces.
